Pago lives with his mother, Philus, along with other harp seal mothers and pups. Love cradles them on top of the floating ice above blue ocean waters. However, in the same waters, death waits. Life for a growing seal pup changes rapidly, like shifting icebergs.
The key to survival is to learn fast. Pago, the harp seal, is pulled into a world of unknowns and must make sense of it all during his "Trials on Ice." His journey unfolds into a lifelong journey of survival. Along the way, he befriends other seals, especially Revlin. Together, they face many trials out on the ice, including the deadly kind, which lurk around on all fours or swim in the cold waters below. Some even walk on two legs across the ice. However, during the early 1800s, some Native American tribes classified this mark as "The Mark of a Soul Mate." With it comes a Blessing or Curse. The tribe's Elders know these special ones will eventually be visited by Animal Spirits or Shape-Shifters. The spirits will present them with a path to follow, filled with challenges. They must find their soulmate, who possesses the opposite mark. If they fail, it has lifelong consequences.
In the Black Hills of South Dakota, one particular Sioux Tribe lives by these rules. They have recently been blessed with a young girl named "Dark-Moon," born with an identifying circular shape on her lower back. The Blessing or Curse introduces her to unfortunate encounters. Early in childhood, a cursed timber wolf bites her, adding an unexpected twist to her journey. She can now assume two forms: a human and the majestic, wild timber wolf. Her transformations occur monthly under the new moon. She faces a relentless journey across prairie lands of the Black Hills into unforgiving forests, filled with challenges: death, love, heroes, and villains. This emotional ride will make or break her mind, body, heart, and soul as an unavoidable conflict between wolves and humans unfolds.
